Our Curriculum

At Rowan Gate Primary School we aim to deliver a broad and balanced curriculum, with a strong emphasis on the development of self-esteem and independence. Our curriculum directly supports the aims of the school. The Curriculum is the sum of all the planned activities that we organise in order to promote learning, and personal growth and development.

Pupils in Nursery and Reception follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum which is delivered through thematic play based activities. This is organised over a 2 year cycle that allows children to build on previous experiences and learning.

Whilst in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 the pupils are taught a broad and balanced curriculum based on the National Curriculum. This is delivered through a mixture of Core Subjects and a thematic, Creative Curriculum approach.

English, Maths, Science, PSHE, RE, Computing and PE are Core subjects and are taught as discrete lessons each week. By teaching these subjects as discrete subjects we are acknowledging the role these subjects play in ensuring that our pupils are able to develop strong foundations in their learning as well as developing positive levels of physical and emotional wellbeing.

The Rowan Gate Creative Curriculum incorporates the knowledge skills and concepts of Geography, History, Art, Design Technology and Music into a thematic approach with a broad topic title, allowing for a more flexible and creative approach to the learning of pupils. Class teachers are able to plan lessons and activities which respond to the needs and interests of the pupils and enables classes to develop knowledge sills and understanding of a range of topics in greater depth.

At Rowan Gate Primary Schools we recognise that the personal development of pupils, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally, plays a significant part in their ability to learn and achieve. We therefore aim to provide a curriculum that provides pupils with opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs, spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive, caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and richness of their cultures. This can take place across all curriculum areas but has particularly strong links to Religious Education, Collective Worship and Personal, Social, Health & Citizenship Education. Within all curricular activities, children will be encouraged to reflect on the significance of what they are learning, to recognise any challenges to their own attitudes and lifestyle and to recognise a spiritual dimension to their lives.

In order to ensure coverage of the curriculum the Rowan Gate Curriculum is organised into a cycle of units distributed over 2 years allowing pupils to build on previous learning.
